Harrison County Commission Approves Fund Request

APRIL 17, 2008 - Clarksburg Mission board members and staff spent over an hour Thursday in productive conversation before the Harrison County Commission. We had provided each Commissioner with a copy of our 2007 Annual Report in advance. They had several questions, a few suggestions, and were empathetic with the goals and programs of the Mission.  They also thanked us for providing them a fuller, more detailed picture of what the Mission does so that they, in turn, are better prepared to answer their constitutents who may have questions. In the end, the Commissioners approved our request for $10,000 in funding.

MARCH 2008 - First Annual Polar Plunge a Blast - Dozens of people came out Saturday, March 8 to watch a few brave souls take the first annual Polar Bear Plunge into Maple Lake to raise money for the Clarksburg Mission. Community Garden

NOVEMBER 2007  West Virginia University Extension Office and Master Gardeners are working together with Clarksburg Mission to create a community garden in Glen Elk. Twelve families will each plant and care for an 8x12 plot of ground.

The Master Gardeners and West Virginia University Extension staff will be doing a workshop to help prepare families to successfully grow a vegetable garden that will supplement their food budget and provide a more balanced diet. Specific rules and policies will apply.

Dr. John Jett will draw up plans for the project. Rebecca Eneix- Chong from Master Gardeners and Larry Campbell, West Virginia University Harrison County Extension officer, have been working with the Mission on this project since last fall.

“Thanks to a planned property exchange, the Mission will now have the chance to add this project to our community outreach,” said Clarksburg Mission Director Frank Jarman.

Clarksburg Mission Hosts Open House

Ten Representatives from state correctional institutes met at Clarksburg Mission on July 21 to discuss programs available to those leaving the institutions.
Representatives were from Hazelton Federal Prison, Kennedy Federal Prison, Pruntytown Correctional Center, Huttonsville Correctional Center, and North Central Regional Jail.
Pruntytown Unit Manager Brenda Thompson said she was extremely impressed with the programs offered at Clarksburg Mission.
“I know the Mission from a long time ago, back when they had only the one building,” Thompson said. “So much has been updated and there have been many changes.”
Besides housing the homeless and feeding the hungry, Clarksburg Mission offers men and women on parole or probation a structured Christian environment including case management, the Employment Initiative Program, Bible studies, and mentoring programs to help residents get back on their feet. Additionally, Claudia Odell will be visiting some of the facilities to offer help from the Mission Employment Initiative Program (EIP).
“Clarksburg Mission is a great place to restart your life,” said Clarksburg Mission Director Frank Jarman. “The Mission and our community have many resources to offer.”
